Equi-Feeds Maiden Plate
★★★½★Confidence · ★★★½ 3.5/5Cleanest Trips
Settled Mid-Field
Wide / Tactical
A weak maiden, but with a very useful piece of collateral form: six of these met in the same 2200m Fairview Poly maiden on 24 July, which is far stronger evidence than comparing isolated ratings. Monkey’s Wedding should get one of the cleanest trips from gate 2, with Dead Poets Society from 3 also able to save ground. The key tactical horse is Masterofthebaroque from stall 10 — if he can cross without spending energy he becomes extremely dangerous. Because this is 1900m rather than 1,600m or below, the draw alone should not determine the race.
LUCA DA WHEELS Predicted Winner
The career record is not glamorous, but this is precisely the type where current trajectory matters far more than the historical figures. His recent sequence reads 8th → 6th → 5th → 2nd, and that latest second was his best performance to date: he finished second over 2200m on this Polytrack on 24 July, ahead of Capranica, Dead Poets Society, Monkey’s Wedding, Straight Red and Lyrics And Songs. He was not simply the best of that group — he was clearly moving forward while doing it. The drop from 2200m to 1900m is the question, but his earlier Poly runs show improvement as he has gone beyond sprint and mile trips, and as a Master Of My Fate out of a Silvano mare there is enough stamina in the pedigree. He is race-fit at 17 days, proven on this surface, proven beyond today’s trip, and still only nine starts, so less exposed than several rivals.
MASTEROFTHEBAROQUE Main Danger
On underlying ability alone there is a strong argument for placing him first. He has had only six starts, carries the strongest established rating among the older males, and his latest effort was another step forward — fourth over 1600m on this Polytrack, beaten only around 2¼ lengths. His figures of 5-5-4-4-6-4 do not look spectacular, but he has generally been racing at shorter trips, and by Master Of My Fate out of a Judpot mare the move to 1900m should help rather than hinder. Unlike the more exposed maidens he retains developmental room. Two things keep him second: the selection has already produced the stronger long-distance Poly evidence, and he is drawn 10, widest of all — although 1900m mitigates the bias, the opening stages still need careful negotiation around this compact circuit.
CAPRANICA Strong Collateral Form
Considerably more interesting since transferring yards. His first run for the current setup produced third over 2200m here, only a quarter-length behind the selection and ahead of the other horses out of that race — not theoretical improvement but actual current evidence. He has had only eight starts, produced a strong first run on this Polytrack, stays further than 1900m, returns after just 17 days, and his latest performance was clearly better than his previous Cape form. The question is whether dropping 300m plays slightly more to the selection’s strengths, but there was little between them last time and he deserves serious respect.
MONKEY'S WEDDING The Consistent One
Probably the strongest body of placed form — fourteen starts yielding six placings, including a run of 3rd, 3rd, 2nd, 2nd before two latest fifths, and he has already placed over today’s course-and-distance range. He gets draw 2, giving Chad Little every opportunity for an economical position. The concern is 14 starts without winning: enough evidence to suggest he can repeatedly contend in maidens without necessarily having much improvement left. In the direct 24 July line he finished behind the selection, Capranica and Dead Poets Society, so there is form to reverse — though the shorter trip and the low draw both assist.
WINDOW TO MY SOUL Ability, But Fitness Unknown
The difficult horse to place. On older form he has enough ability to win this, having previously finished second over an all-weather trip around 1900m, and his broader staying form is stronger than the basic recent figures suggest. The negatives are substantial: 197 days since his latest race, a first start for a new stable, draw 9, and a five-year-old already twelve starts without winning. He cannot be preferred on what he did several months ago when the principals are arriving with fresh evidence from this track — but if fit and ready first-up he can certainly challenge.
